Primaries are March 5



The State of Alabama will hold its party primaries and constitutional amendment election on Tuesday, March 5. Most of the contested races that will appear on the ballot involve statewide offices, with the exception of the United States presidential race and two district races for Fayette County Commissioner on the Republican ballot.

Porter, Hughes take primary wins

Longtime Fayette Revenue Commissioner Ruby Porter defeated challenger Marion Dodson 2,808 to 1,641 votes to secure the Republican nomination for her current position during the March 3 primary. Since there is no Democratic opposition for the office, Porter is basically assured of her re-election to the position. The unofficial totals from the March 3 primary show that 5,436 votes were cast in Fayette County, with 4,633 votes (85.23 percent) cast on Republican ballots.

Candidates qualify for runoff, Lowery and Burkhalter secure party nominations

Mike Freeman and Mike Newman will face each other in the Republican runoff for Fayette County probate judge, while Byron Yerby and Fayette Police Chief Danny Jenkins will square off against each other for the Republican nomination for sheriff. During the primary elections held on June 5, incumbent Fayette County Superintendent Jim Burkhalter defeated challenger Sandy Aldridge 2,577 to 1,800 to secure the Republican superintendent nomination. No one qualified in the county to run for superintendent as a Democrat.

The June 5 primaries for the Democratic and Republican parties are June 5, as several loca candidates seek their parties’ nominations. In the Republican race for Sheriff, current Fayette police chief Danny Jenkins, Byron Yerby and Justin White face each other for the nomination. The Democratic nominee, Tierre Agnew, is unopposed and current Sheriff Rodney Ingle will be on the general election ballot as an Independent.
