About

The first full issue of The Times-Record was published on Wednesday, August 24, 1977. At that time, the staff consisted of Jesse Ayres as publisher, David Poynor as editor, Bobbie Cross as advertising director and Jerrie Elliott as typesetter.

While others newspapers stretch out their coverage to include a wide area, we choose to focus on our county. Our emphasis is on events that impact the lives of our readers - action taken by county and city governments, how local sports teams are doing, what major events are happening in the area and what might be going on in area schools. This attention to detail has kept people coming to us for their news for over 40 years.

The Times-Record was purchased in the 1980s by Hershel Lake and Horace Moore. In addition to The Times-Record, the company owns additional weekly newspapers in northwest Alabama:

  • Pickens County Herald
  • Journal-Record
  • Northwest Alabamian

Currently, the staff consists of Jerrie Elliott, now the general manager of the paper; Dean Maddox, news editor; Gina Lynn, advertising director; and Meshell Tingle, advertising design and layout.
