Easter Day storms cause tree, road damage in Fayette County

Trees fell across New Hope Road, blocking traffic until the road could be cleared by the county work crew.

A series of thunderstorms on Easter Sunday caused considerable tree and road damage throughout the county. The storms began in the county at approximately 3 p.m. and continued periodically until approximately 9 p.m. The wind and more than three inches of rainfall caused numerous trees to either break or topple over, many of the trees falling unto roadways and power lines. According to Fayette County Emergency Management Director (EMA) Russ Taylor, his office had not received any reports of structural damage or injuries due to the storms.

Heavy rains cause damage on Fayette County roads

Heavy rains last week caused extensive damage on county roads in the Fayette area. Fayette County Road Supervisor Randall Moore said that rain washed out culverts on four roads, forcing the temporary closure of those roads and the re-routing of traffic. He said that most all dirt roads in the county suffered washes, and the rain also caused several trees to fall across county roads.

Road resurfacing to affect travel

A major resurfacing project on U.S. Highway 43/171 will force motorists in Fayette to exercise patience and caution during the next several weeks. The resurfacing is occurring from the intersection of Highway 159 (Gordo Rd.) on the south end of town and will conclude at the intersection of Highway 102 on the north end of Fayette. The road construction is expected to conclude during the summer.
