HELEN BAKER
Funeral services for Mrs. Helen Hope Wright Baker, age 83, of Fayette, was held Sunday, July 20, 2025 at 2 p.m. from Shepherd Baptist Church. Burial followed in the adjoining cemetery. She died Wednesday, July 16, at Fayette Medical Center.
Helen was born on July 9, 1942, in Newtonville, to the late Dempsey Lee Wright and Edna Ruth Patterson Wright. Helen was the baby of the family of three children, all of whom were born and raised in Newtonville. She was a member of the Fayette County High School Class of 1960.
Upon graduating high school, Helen began work at the First National Bank of Fayette, which later became Regions Bank. She worked there for forty four years until she retired in 2004. Everyone that did business with the bank loved banking with “Mrs. Helen”.
Helen was a devoted life-long member of Shepherd Baptist Church. She became the church pianist at the age of 18 and continued to play until her recent illness. She also served as the treasurer of the church for many years. She loved her church and they loved her.
In addition to her parents, Helen was preceded in death by her husband of 63 years, Billy Lynn Baker; and brothers. Lanier Duell Wright and Murray Joe Wright.
Helen is survived by her sons, David Lynn (Pam) Baker of Fayette and William Mark (Jill) Baker of Wetumpka; four grandchildren, Cortney Lynn (Ernie) Nabors, Corey Joe (Bailey) Baker, all of Fayette, Ella Katherine Baker and Mary Ellis Baker, both of Wetumpka; five great-grandchildren,Brayden Howell Baker, Carter Reed Baker, Harper Rae Baker, Lizzy Nabors and Aleigha Nabors, all of Fayette; sisters in law, Barbara Wright of Fayette, Betty Belue of Tuscumbia, Shirley (Jerre) Glover and Sally Baker, both of Decatur; and a brother in law, Bob (Gayle) Baker of Fayette.
Pallbearers were Corey Baker, Brayden Baker, Ernie Nabors, Will Brown, Paul Gibson and Tim Bobo.
Helen wanted to offer a special note of gratitude to her daughters in law, Pam Baker and Jill Baker for the love and care they provided during her recent illness. The family wants to thank each of you for your love, friendship and support, especially through this difficult time. Special thanks to caregivers Ms. Elvira Stowe, Ms. Shelia Cannon and Ms. Anita Hughes; Dr. Martha Jo Christian and her staff; and Alabama Hospice Care.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Shepherd Baptist Church, 10722 Hwy. 171 South, Fayette, AL 35555.
