JOHN GAYNUS JENKINS

Funeral services for Mr. John Gaynus Jenkins, age 100 of Fayette, were held Wednesday, July 9, 2025 at 11 a.m. from Nelson Funeral Home Chapel. Burial followed in Pleasant Hill Baptist Church Cemetery. He died Sunday, July 6, at the V.A. Hospital.
J.G, as he was known by many, lived his 100 years of life in both Alabama and Mississippi but considered Fayette as home. He loved and enjoyed many years living on “Mount Gaynus”, as his grandchildren called their beautiful home place near Fayette. Gaynus spent his days serving his country in the Navy and serving his community as a fire captain. After his retirement from Clarksdale Fire Department, he continued to work as a business owner in Hamilton and then in Fayette. He spent his spare time hunting, fishing, gardening, playing dominoes, and enjoying time with his two sons, his grandchildren, and Bonnie, his wife of 77 years. Gaynus Jenkins was loved and respected by his family and close friends and will be dearly missed.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Johnnie and Ollie Jenkins; his eight siblings, Hazel Hogue, Marcie Dacus, Travis Jenkins, Dennis Jenkins, Lindy Jenkins, Joe Ed Jenkins, Herschel Jenkins and Isadore.
Survivors include his wife, Bonnie Newton Jenkins of Fayette; two sons, John Edward Jenkins (Barbara) of Knoxville, Tenn. and James Michael Jenkins (Carolyn) of Oxford, Miss.; grandsons, David Jenkins (Stephanie) and Paul Jenkins (Victoria), all of Knoxville, Tenn., Jake Jenkins (Val) of Oxford, Miss., Bart Jenkins (Molly) of Red Banks, Miss. and Thomas Jenkins of Olive Branch, Miss.; great-grandchildren, Madelyn, Charlotte, Haley, R.J., Carson, Hadley, West and Collier; and many nieces and nephews.
Honorary pallbearers were members of Fellowship Bible Sunday School Class, Barry Lowe, Paul Thompson, Jeffie Lawrence, Bud Robinson, Joe Smith, Rex Beauchamp, Jerry Childress and Ronald Gallups.
Active pallbearers were his grandsons.
In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to Fayette First Baptist Church.
