The Fayette Tigers opened its 2024 baseball season at home on Feb. 15 against the historically strong Bibb County Choctaws, losing by the score of 9-0. Landon Lowe started the game at pitcher for the Tigers, allowing three walks, two hits and three runs to Bibb County in the first inning.
The Berry and Hubbertville girls’ basketball teams each finished second in their respective area tournaments before losing in the first round of the sub-regional tournaments.
The Hubbertville basketball teams had a very successful week, with both the boys’ and girls’ teams winning five of the six games they played during the week. The boys’ team began the week with a 42-34 victory over Vina.
Fayette’s boys’ basketball team traveled to Hubbertville last Friday night and defeated the Lions 70-41. Will Jackson led Fayette with 24 points and four assists, followed by Taylor Kelly with nine points and three steals. Tucker Whitley had eight points, five rebounds and five assists, while Landon Kimbrell scored seven points and Keyshaun Hughes added six points. Elijah Benton scored five points, Max McDonald, Scott Davis and Jake Rickman scored three points each, and Isaiah Estep added two points.
Hubbertville boys’ basketball team traveled to Lynn on Jan. 9 and was defeated by the Bears 57-35. Cole Brand led the Lions in scoring with 10 points, followed by Kane Rushing with eight points. Cam Pendley had six points, Blaize Wakefield added five points, while Kade Watkins and Sebashton Harris had three points each. On Jan. 12, Hubbertville hosted Berry and won by the score of 52-48.
The Hubbertville basketball teams competed in the Winfield Holiday Tournament on Dec. 28 – 30, 2023, with the boys’ team winning one of three games and the girls’ team suffering three losses. The Hubbertville boys started the tournament with a 70-31 loss to Sulligent.
Fayette County High School’s Hollis Strawbridge and Hubbertville’s T.J. Keeton were each selected as second team All-State football players by the Alabama Sportswriters Association following the 2023 season. Strawbridge, a senior, was selected as a Class 3A second team defensive back. He was one of the senior leaders on the Tigers’ football team, and contributed heavily not only on defense, but also as an offensive receiver and blocker. T.J. Keeton, a junior, was selected as a Class 1A second team running back.
The Hubbertville girls started the week off strong against South Lamar, then finished the week as North Alabama Conference (NAC) tournament runner-up. On Tuesday, Dec. 5, the Lady Lions defeated South Lamar 66-18. Hubbertville was led in scoring by Kylee Dunn with 20 points, followed by Georgia Gardner with 17 and Layla Fredrick with 14 points.
The Hubbertville boys’ basketball team won two-of-three basketball games for the week.
The Lion boys defeated Vina on Nov. 28 by the score of 61-22. Hubbertville was led in scoring by Cole Brand with 14 points, followed by Kane Rushing with 13 and Kade Watkins with 11 points.
After finishing the 2023 football season, many of Fayette’s players quickly transitioned into basketball season. The FCHS boys’ team lost its first game on Nov. 11 to Cordova by the score of 56-53, but bounced back two days later to claim a 51-45 victory over Brookwood.
